AI Visibility
There's a New Name for Being Visible Where the Answer Is Generated
AEO — answer engine optimization, sometimes called LLMO — is the discipline of getting your site into the answers AI tools generate, not just the list of links a search engine ranks. It earned a name of its own for a reason worth understanding.
The Definition
Optimising to be the answer, not just a result
For twenty years, being visible in search meant one thing: ranking in a list of blue links. Answer engines changed the destination. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or a search engine's AI overview a question, they often get a single synthesised answer built from a handful of sources — with no ranked list of ten links underneath it. AEO is the work of being one of those sources: the site an answer engine reaches for, quotes, and attributes.
The stakes are different from ranking low. If your site isn't one of the sources the answer was built from, you're not in tenth place — you're not in the conversation at all. There's no "scroll down to find you." The answer is the whole surface.
Why A New Name
Why this isn't just SEO with a buzzword stapled on
It's tempting to treat AEO as SEO wearing a new hat. It isn't — and the difference is real, not marketing. Ranking well in traditional search rewards relevance and authority to a system building an index of pages. Showing up in an AI answer rewards something closer to being quotable: content specific and clearly structured enough that an answer engine can lift a self-contained, correct claim out of it and attribute it properly.
Those are two different jobs a page can do, and most sites have only ever been written for one of them. A page can rank on the first results screen and never get cited in an AI answer; a page with modest rankings can get quoted constantly because it answers a real question plainly. That's not a contradiction — it's the whole reason the discipline needed its own name.
It also isn't a fad that reverses next quarter. The shift toward answers-as-the-result is structural. Treating it as a trend post is exactly how a site gets left out of the new surface while it's still arguing about whether the surface is real.
What ARIA Shows You
Whether the shift already reached you
The abstract version of this is easy to nod along to and easy to ignore. The concrete version is the one that changes behaviour: whether, right now, an answer engine mentions your business when a real buyer asks it a real question.
The finding, in plain English: "When someone asks an AI the kind of question that should surface a business like yours, here's whether you come up at all — and whether it's a competitor being named instead. This is the new front door, and right now it's either open to you or it isn't."
Understanding what AEO is matters only because the next question — "and where do I actually stand?" — has a real answer.

Where to go next
Once the definition is clear, the practical questions follow: are you actually being cited?, what makes content that wins AI answers, and where SEO and AEO genuinely differ. If you're still building the traditional-search foundation underneath all of this, that's the Search Visibility pillar.
Being quotable also depends partly on the technical structured-data markup that makes a page's facts machine-readable — a hands-on job on Audry's side: Structured Data / Schema Markup Basics.
